Perimenopause Symptoms
How do you know if you are suffering from perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the transitional period before menopause. During perimenopause, levels of estrogen, a key female hormone, start to decrease. You may begin having menopause-like symptoms, such as hot flashes or irregular periods. Perimenopause can last for years, and when you go a full 12 months without a period, menopause has officially begun.
Common symptoms of perimenopause include:
Changes to your periods: The first sign of perimenopause is usually a change in the normal pattern of your periods, such as irregular cycles. Eventually, you’ll stop having periods altogether.
Mental health symptoms: These may include changes in mood (such as low mood, anxiety, mood swings, and low self-esteem) and problems with memory or concentration (often referred to as “brain fog”).
Physical symptoms: These can range from hot flushes (sudden feelings of heat or cold in your face, neck, and chest) to difficulty sleeping due to night sweats, palpitations, headaches, muscle aches, joint pains, weight gain, skin changes, reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness, and more.
